I originally replied to William directly, but sharing more widely in case
anyone has thoughts/input or finds this useful.

I have a lot of clients through my work at Kitchen Table Consultants that
do cold shipping. I tend to focus on the financial management around this -
and less on the nuts and bolts of operations - but I've gleaned some
insights over the years. Generally, I've seen that it can be a real boon to
customer acquisition and opening up your customer base in a big way. That
said, cold shipping via third party is something you really need to dial in
and get right, and the potential to lose money quickly is very real
using this method (managing costs, margins, and price is critical).
Generally, I'd recommend it but be careful!

Here are some resources that might be helpful:

I have a client that uses these folks for packaging and liners:
https://www.periwrap.com/

Grazecart has a guide on materials for cold shipping:
https://www.grazecart.com/shipping-toolkit

I'd recommend Shipstation for third party shipping rates:
https://www.shipstation.com/

I'd also recommend checking out Food Chain Wars podcast for tips (developed
by the folks at Grazecart): https://www.foodchainwars.com/

My co-worker at Taste Profit Marketing put this guide together for cold
shipping:
https://tasteprofit.com/product/small-business-cold-shipping-guide-and-workbook-frozen-foods/

Taste Profit Marketing does consulting on this, although they would charge
for their time on this. If you'd like an intro, I'd be happy to do so.

Feel free to get in touch if you'd like to chat!
