I tend to focus on the financial management around this - and less on the nuts and bolts of operations - but I've gleaned some insights over the years. Generally, I've seen that it can be a real boon to customer acquisition and opening up your customer base in a big way. That said, cold shipping via third party is something you really need to dial in and get right, and the potential to lose money quickly is very real using this method (managing costs, margins, and price is critical).
