Local meat is in high demand – *and short supply*.  You can help change
that! With just a few minutes of your time, you can support small farmers
and help increase local meat options for people across Texas.

The Texas Senate has passed a bill that would allow small farmers to sell
any size “share” in a live animal to consumers and then use a custom
slaughterhouse.  This will make local meat more affordable and available
for many people!

*Tell the Texas House to approve the bill!*

*More about the problem:* Unless animals are processed in a facility that
meets USDA inspection standards, the meat cannot be sold to consumers. But
those standards are designed for mega-meatpackers that process thousands of
animals a day, and are difficult and very expensive for small operations.

*The result: *There are too few small inspected processors.  Many small
farmers have to wait months to get their animals processed, or drive many
hours (wasting time, fuel, money and stressing the animals) to get to one.

*The solution: *Custom processors are regulated by the State. These
facilities already process meat for hunters and homesteaders, meeting
strict food safety standards while still being more accessible and
affordable for farmers. But right now, they are only available to consumers
willing to buy a quarter of a whole animal at a time.  SB 691 would allow
small farmers and consumers to use these custom processors more easily.
